Tobacco Education in Doctor of Pharmacy Programs in the United States (2021-2022)

ObjectivesTo characterize (a) tobacco cessation content, delivery, and assessment methods, (b) faculty perceptions of content adequacy, (c) interest in enhancing curricular as a result pharmacists’ new, expanding role prescribing medications.MethodsOne member responsible for teaching cessation-related at each college school pharmacy was invited to participate national, web-based survey. Survey items assessed various aspects education gauged attending train-the-trainer program integrating treatment specialist training part the curriculum their institution.ResultsOf 132 survey respondents (93.0% response), 98.5% reported into required curriculum, 15.2% integrated an elective course. The median number formal educational hours 5.0 (range, 1.0-18.0). One third (33.3%) students’ competency using objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). Most (83.8%) felt that institution has adequate expertise teach comprehensive cessation, were interested learn educate students on latest developments pharmacist-provided cessation. Similarly, 95.4% incorporating Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) PharmD curriculum.ConclusionGiven scope practice medications, there is need enhance programs. Current expressed coursework enable graduates work top license when treating use dependence.
